CHAP Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol

An authentication technique in which a server sends a challenge to the requester after the link has been established. The requester responds with a value obtained by using a one-way hash function. The server checks the response by comparing it to its own calculation of the expected hash value. If the values match, the authentication is acknowledged. If the values do not match, the connection is usually terminated.
