Starting in 2010, in an effort to better protect consumers, the Norton team began to study the individual effects of cybercrime. That research was published as the Norton Cybercrime Report (now the Norton Report), which described how people behaved online, their attitudes and security habits, and the dangers and costs of cybercrime.
In the inaugural report, Norton discovered that a shocking two-thirds of all Internet users worldwide had been victims of cybercrime. “The Norton Cybercrime Report: The Human Impact” was the first study to shine a light on the emotional impact of these violations. As one victim explained, “I was emotionally and financially unprepared because I never thought I would be a victim of such a crime. I felt violated, as if someone had actually come inside my home to gather this information, and as if my entire family was exposed to this criminal act.”
The 2013 Norton Report surveyed 13,000 adults in 24 countries in one of the largest global studies of its kind, and it focused on the mobile space and costs of cybercrime. Overall, the number of adults who experienced cybercrime decreased, but the associated costs increased, as did the opportunities for cybercriminals as more people went mobile. Although security for mobile devices exists, like Norton Mobile Security, almost half of all smartphone or tablet users don’t even use password locks on their mobile devices. Since so many mobile device owners use them to send emails, make purchases, and share personal information on social media, there is an urgent need for higher awareness of mobile cybercrime.
But of even more concern — and potential cost — the study found consumers use their mobile devices for more than personal business. “Forty-nine percent of consumers use their personal mobile device for both work and play,” said Stephen Trilling, Symantec Chief Technology Officer. “This creates entirely new security risks for enterprises as cybercriminals have the potential to access even more valuable information.”
